The UK's Telegraph reports that Julius Malema, the African National Congress's fiery youth league leader, was expelled from the party yesterday after senior figures ruled he had shown no remorse for "sowing divisions" within its ranks.
The 30-year-old was convicted by party officials in November and suspended for five years but his punishment was severely increased by an appeals committee late last night.
In a statement released at the ruling party's headquarters in Johannesburg, the committee said Malema's threats to turn the youth wing against the party were "tantamount to holding the ANC to ransom".
He has two weeks to appeal but the decision was widely seen as ending the political career of a man who was once one of the party's brightest stars and credited with helping elect President Jacob Zuma.
