Mr Sioi Sumari yesterday won the re-run of CCM’s opinion poll to pick the party’s candidate for a by-election to replace his father, Mr Jeremiah Sumari, as Arumeru East MP.
In what was billed as a battle of titans, the younger Sumari, whose father died nearly six weeks ago, polled 761 votes against his rival Mr William Sarakikya , who got 361.
The bigger challenge ahead for Mr Sumari is winning the by-election scheduled for April 1, a goal desired by candidates fielded by other parties, including Chadema, the main rival of the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi.
Yesterday’s re-run was in compliance with an order issued by the Central Committee (CC) of CCM, prompted by failure by none of the seven aspirants in the first, February 20 poll, to get more than 50 per cent of the total votes cast.
Thirty-six-year-old Sioi, a banker by profession, had scooped 361 votes against Sarakikya’s 259.
According to the returning officer, the CCM vice chairman (Mainland), Mr Pius Msekwa, a total of 1,124 votes were cast in the fresh poll, two of which were spoilt.
Whereas Mr Sumari is technically CCM’s candidate already, the candidature has to be formally pronounced by the party’s CC as the nominee, at a meeting slated for tomorrow.
